Girl Cartoons, Bronies, and the Princess Paradox

Dr. Katia Perea, Sociology and Media Studies Professor at CUNY- City University New York, specializes in television girl cartoons and the counter-hegemonic potential that exists within the culture industry in the form of playful transgression to gender normative coding. The Bronies, Disney’s master narrative, and the princess paradox will be explored in Professor Perea’s discussion on the genre of Girl Cartoons while exploring how gender normative coding is playfully transgressed from within mainstream media.

 

Surviving as Womyn and Nonbinary People of Color with Mental Illness in Cosplay

We create a safe, open environment to discuss the challenges and help provide solutions that will help folks survive in the cosplay community and in the outside world.

If you signed up for the cosplay contest, you will be given a time slot during this time to have your costume judged. You will need to show up on time, and we recommend showing up early if you can.

This panel promotes cospositivity – stressing how important it is to cosplay from the heart, whoever you want, whenever you want; having acceptance to all shapes, sizes, colors, genders and skill level. Spreading how important it is to be kind to all cosplayers because they were brave enough to cosplay, put a lot of thought into it and do it out of the love for a fandom or character. Let’s support each other, appreciate the craft, creativity and hard work that goes into cosplay, but most of all, let’s all have fun.

 

You are NOT the Father!!!: An Examination of Familial and Cordial Relationships in the World of Anime

In contrast, Goku’s rival Vegeta prides himself as a father and mentor for his fellow. Comics: An Underappreciated Form of Literature

For years, comics have been criticized as mindless entertainment with no merit. Even with comic book movies making bank at the box office, people still view comics in a negative light. Reviewfix.com contributors, comic book readers and literary specialists Rocco Sansone and Donna-lyn Washington explain why comics have literary merit and should be seen in the same light as “normal” literature. Topics will range from how superheroes are the modern day epic poem heroes, how artists are using comics to tell their stories and how comics are used to give a political and socio-economical stance.

Superheroes have always been a source of strength for those who feel weak. This panel and discussion will build on the two-time national book award winning self-help book, “Heroes, Villains, and Healing: A Guide for Male Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Using DC Comic Superheroes and Villains.” In the age of the “Me Too” movement, the 1 in 6 male survivors of sexual abuse have been silent, limiting the conversation and continuing perpetration. Superheroes provide a safe means to address complex issues that male survivors have responded to positively since the book’s publication.

 

Depression and Artistic Freedom

Let’s talk about a dark subject that affects a lot of creatives. This panelist hopes his honesty and sincerity about mental illness will get through and help someone who really need it. The audience will build a concept for a character who might be dealing with mental illness. Trying to make it in any artistic industry is extremely competitive. To do what you love you have to have passion, drive and solid work ethic. The problem for people with depression is that it kills your drive, passion and your work ethic.

Our focus is to introduce young artists to cartooning through their own original drawings. We will teach basic anatomy and cartoon layouts. We will work with young artists to create cool super heroes to match their wonderful powers. The kids will make up costume designs and learn how to draw them. At the completion of the session, the kids will have a basic character they can place into a fun story, and have loads of fun with.

 

The Big Applesauce: Depictions of NYC in Anime
