The Nerd Yorker
PREMIERING ON SCREEN THIS WEEKEND
What do Nerd Yorkers munch on at the cinema? Sure, popcorn if they want to be retro or ironic. But whether they prefer kale chips or locally grown non-GMO macadamia nuts or tabouli on gluten-free pita, they’ll be munching down plenty for this big opening weekend.
Horror fans have waited long enough for Rings, continuing the long and successful Japanese-American franchise. But we’d still go and see it just on the strength of the trailer.
And if you like your February science fiction fix to also get you off the hook for Valentine’s Day (isn’t it great to live in a town where nerds can actually date?!) then your go-to flick is The Space Between Us. Women are from Earth in this romance, but at least one, sweet, lovable guy is from Mars.
IN REAL LIFE
If you’ve never been to a pop culture convention before, maybe Glimmerdark isn’t the one to start with. First, it’s a very specific geek kink it caters to: closer to renaissance faire than comic con. Second, any party that reminds you in its posted rules that you must wear clothes — not just body paint — in the hotel lobby and that you need to avoid angering the mermaid or damaging the unicorn in the pool is a special kind of happening. But make up your own mind — Glimmerdark runs through Sunday at Princeton’s Hyatt Regency.
Meanwhile, there will be some nerdy Meetup groups convening over the week. The Sci Fi Book Club will be discussing the latest Kim Stanley Robinson space opera and the Anime Fans Meetup Group will hold its monthly get-together. Check Meetup.com for more info.
BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN
Anime fans have waited a long time for the big-budget Hollywood treatment of Ghost in the Shell featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt and Juliette Brioche.
They’ll have to keep waiting.
Meantime, though, the original 1995 English-dubbed version is slated for a two-night run at Brooklyn’s Alamo Drafthouse, this Tuesday and Wednesday.
WHAT’S NEW AT BOROUGHCON
Celebrity announcements start this week. Looks like we got someone good over the past week from The Walking Dead!
We’re also very happy to announce a sponsorship from the ThinkGeek retail outlet in Suffolk County’s Smith Haven Mall!
We’re coordinating with New York City’s tourism and development office to schedule a formal press conference to announce our headliners, ticket prices and much more. So stay tuned.
We’ve got our e-commerce capability fully tested and can start selling tickets as soon as the big boss gives the signal.
As we’re just a little over a hundred days away, the pace is quickening. Much more to come!
