The Nerd Yorker
IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE
This weekend belongs to The Lego Batman Movie. There’s nothing else. There’s no need.
UP TO AND INCLUDING VALENTINE’S DAY
Traditionally, Valentine’s Day is not a big day for nerds. We hate how commercial it’s gotten. (Yeah, let’s go with that.)
But the Nerd Yorker’s romantic mood is set Sunday night, as The DL on the Lower East Side hosts Mad Love: Poison Ivy’s Cosplay Ball. On the actual day of celebration of courtly love — known to geeks everywhere as Tuesday — you can catch a rare screening of Lon Chaney as The Phantom of the Opera. This is right across the Williamsburg Bridge at Nighthawk Cinema. The 1925 silent film will be accompanied by live music and, in a darkened theater, nobody knows whether or not you have a date.
Then it’s back to geekdom as usual. Thursday night is the New York e-Sports Meetup at 20 Pine Street in the Financial District, featuring presentations by SuperData Research, TrinityVR and other acquired tastes.
