This isn’t a week for sitting back and letting geekdom come to you. We couldn’t find a single fantasy or sci-fi film debuting this weekend and, as for TV, well, welcome to December. Not to be Grinchy about it, but t’aint the season for those with our obsessions.
Tonight, though, there’s something for kids, if you’re crazy enough to be in Midtown on a Friday evening during tourist season. But if you can elbow past the tree gawkers and find your way to Nintendo NYC in Rockefeller Plaza, you can introduce your seedlings to some of their favorite characters. Mario and Luigi will appear from 6-7 p.m., and Pikachu from 7-8. Then good luck explaining to the little angels why that Pokemon won’t fit on their phone.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
If you haven’t been to Winter Con, this is the time to correct that. It’s a smallish but overachieving convention that’s better organized than it is publicized. Stars from Star Trek, Star Wars and The Walking Dead mingle with the reunited casts of The Road Warrior and The Warriors. (A reunion of Scandal featuring Patti Smyth would make the weekend complete.) Oh, and you can meet Adrienne Barbeau from Escape from New York and Swamp Thing. If you see us in our BoroughCon T-shirts at Resorts World Casino, say hi!
Look, we can’t explain this. Just get to the Parkside Lounge on East Houston Street by 8 p.m. Wednesday for a performance of Wild Women of Planet Wongo. It’s music. It’s comedy. It’s sci-fi. It’s a masquerade dance party. It’s a drunken bacchanal (is there any other kind?). We caught some of this act at FlameCon and have rarely enjoyed a live skit more. We’ll see you there this Wednesday and, if you can’t make it, then see it at the same venue the following Wednesday.
